Rave Run, Denver

We never did cross the finish line at the Rave Run. But it wasn’t for lack of trying. The race experienced such an insane turnout the finish chute was clogged with runners wearing flashing lights and neon colors of every shade. No doubt- the race was a hit for people of all ages. The 3.1 mile nocturnal wonderland, decorated with sparking lights, kept racers jamming with electronic music rocking through the entire course.  If you could squeeze past crowds- the afterparty seemed to be jamming! If you love a festive atmosphere, dressing up and running with energetic people- you will want to check out this race.

Winter Park Wipeout

Winter Park Wipeout

We held on tight as a snowmobile towed us through fresh powder, rushed through a snow maze and practiced our aim by shooting pinto beans at targets. To find such whacky and outlandish fun, look no further than the Winter Park Wipeout. The first year event didn’t lack when it came to organization. Racers took off in crazy costumes and criss crossed Winter Park completing challenges you likely haven’t seen before. From Jenga, to eating pancackes without hands and hammerslaugin’ a nail into a board, our group was laughing the entire way.  Since the race isn’t about competition, you are sure to make a few new pals along the way.  After sledding down a hill, running past a snow making machine and jumping into a potato sack  to hop across the finish- it was about s’mores, music, hot chocolate and beer from Avery Brewing Company. I have never experienced an event quite like the Winter Park Wipeout and can’t wait for year number two!

Cost:Individual: $50, Team: $45 (per runner), Zombie: $30

We hope you’re a morning person, because the post apocalyptic playground you’re about to brave offers no protection. At the starting line, you’ll come across a flipped tanker, the source of the toxic compound. After the first kilometer, you’ll enter into a military-controlled apocalypse zone. Beware, this is where your dash from zombies will begin. Around kilometer 3, you’ll make it to a vaccination hydration center. The vaccine will fail, and you’ll have to continue to sprint from zombies. The last 2 kilometers are a free-for-all, as you charge towards freedom. Zombies are everywhere. Helicopters circle overhead and military personnel distribute facemasks for safety during your final steps.Runners have the option of wearing a custom, latex free “life-balloon”. Our brain hungry zombies will try to pop your balloon and take your life before your reach the finish line. But if you’re not fast, don’t worry! Our course is designed like a zombie movie set, so if you don’t wear your balloon or survive the race, you’ll still have a spooky run. Dead or alive, all runners get to complete the entire course and attend the Quarantine Party.

Vampire 5k Denver

Vampire 5k Denver

On April 26, 2013, five cities around the country—Dallas, D.C. , L.A., Atlanta and Denver—will run for blood. Vampire 5k is a run that pits Citizens versus Vampires in a race for survival.

The race begins at dusk and ends under a full moon. Participants may register as either a Vampire or Citizen. Citizens in all white start in one location, Vampires in another.  The paths converge at an unknown location and then the hunt is on! Vampires will try to “convert” citizens by pulling both white garlic flags they will be carrying while running through fog and red powder zones.  Stay around for the post-run Red Dusk after-party with music, red colored beverages, fun awards, and make-up artists on-hand ready to “transform” any willing citizens into new Vampires.

Vampire 5k Denver

Vampire 5k Denver

**All locations will be holding a blood drive and accepting donations benefitting the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross is the nation’s largest supplier of blood and is constantly working to increase the availability of blood to hospitals and transfusion centers. More than 44,000 blood donations are needed every day.

Find out more about blood donation and the Red Cross at www.redcrossblood.org

Beaver Creek Mountain Running Series

Beaver Creek Mountain Running Series

Events like the Snowshoe Edition of the ensure runners can take on the scenic and adventurous mountain trails any time of year. The series kicked off January 6 with a crowd of nearly 300 runners ready to charge the trails surrounding Beaver Creek Mountain.  Having never run on snowshoes, I admit I was a little nervous about the trek ahead. But after the sound of the starting gun, racers took off running, snowshoes and all. We took on steep climbs, even steeper downhills and tried to gain ground on the flat portions. Of course you can walk, but why not try and mix up the old routine?

There are two more races in the series on February 3 and March 3 offering both a 5k and 10k option. There is also a 1K run for the little ones. Having experienced the year’s kick-off race, I can say it’s an event worth hitting the high country for. Here are three reasons to get out on the trails.

Carri WIlbanks and Amy Payne at Beaver Creek Mountain Running Series

Carri WIlbanks and Amy Payne at Beaver Creek Mountain Running Series

It’s fun: Whether you are out to compete with the eye of the tiger, or enjoy time with your friends, the Snowshoe Edition of the Beaver Creek Mountain Running Series at cater to either need. Plus, there are a whole lot of people trudging the trails to motivate you.

It’s inexpensive: Meaning no lift ticket required! Gear includes snowshoes, warm clothing and sturdy trail runners. Free Demo Snowshoes provided by Atlas are available at the start/finish line to the first 50 or so athletes that need them.  Here is a list of gear we recommend trying. The $35 registration fee for the race won’t break the bank, either. Following the race, participants are invited to a meal provided by the Dusty Boot Steakhouse and a drink at the Metropolitan (included in registration).

It’s a heck of a workout: Whether blazing uphill trails or trying to keep balance on the down slopes, snowshoeing uses muscle groups other exercises don’t always hit on. Plus, it’s low impact and offers a way to stay in shape in the winter that keeps you outdoors.

Beaver Creek Mountain Running Series

Beaver Creek Mountain Running Series

Two races left this season:

Sunday February 3, 11 a.m. at Creekside Park.

Sunday, March 3, 2013, 11 a.m. at McCoy Park near the Beaver Creek Nordic Center.

To register, visit www.beavercreek.com or day of the race at the registration.

***The race on February 3 is regional qualifier for the United States Snowshoe Association championships. Anyone interested in qualifying can register as a member through USSSA at www.snowshoeracing.com<http://www.snowshoeracing.com> and have their time from this race used to gain entry into the National Championships in Bend, OR from March 15 through 17, 2013.
